Dental Implant Suitability and Eligibility in Radlett

Man with gray hair_edited_edited.jpg

Dental implants are a highly effective solution for replacing missing teeth, but they are not suitable for everyone in every situation. At Paragondental in Radlett, Dr Andrew Flatters takes the time to assess each patient carefully using digital scans and clinical examination, ensuring implant treatment is recommended only when it is safe, appropriate and likely to succeed long term.

We treat patients from Radlett, Watford, St Albans, Hemel Hempstead and across Hertfordshire. All implant assessments are carried out by Dr Flatters personally.

Paragondental is registered with the General Dental Council. GDC registration details are available on request.

Who Can Have Dental Implants?

Many adults are suitable for dental implant treatment. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have one or more missing teeth

  • Are unhappy with dentures or bridges

  • Have generally healthy gums

  • Are in reasonable overall health

  • Are able to maintain good oral hygiene

Age alone is not usually a limiting factor. What matters most is health, bone quality and commitment to aftercare.

The Importance of Jawbone Health

Dental implants rely on a healthy jawbone for long-term stability. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone can reduce over time.

Using digital scans, we assess:

  • Bone height and width

  • Bone density

  • Position of nerves and sinuses

If bone levels are insufficient, additional treatment such as bone grafting may be recommended before implant placement.

Gum Health and Dental Implants

Healthy gums are essential for successful implant treatment. Active gum disease must be treated before implants are placed.

If gum disease is present, we will:

  • Stabilise gum health first

  • Provide hygiene support and monitoring

  • Reassess implant suitability once gums are healthy

This approach helps protect implants and improves long-term outcomes.

General Health Considerations

Certain medical conditions can affect healing and implant success. These do not always rule out treatment, but they may require additional planning.

We will carefully review:

  • Medical history

  • Medications

  • Conditions affecting healing or immunity

This ensures implant treatment is tailored safely to your individual circumstances.

Smoking and Dental Implants

Smoking can increase the risk of implant complications and affect healing. Patients who smoke may still be suitable for implants, but this is assessed carefully.

We may recommend:

  • Reducing or stopping smoking before treatment

  • Additional monitoring during healing

  • Adjustments to treatment planning

These measures help improve the chances of a successful outcome.

What If I Have Been Told I Am Not Suitable?

Some patients are told they are not suitable for dental implants without a full digital assessment. In many cases, options such as bone grafting or alternative implant solutions may still be possible.

A consultation allows us to explore all appropriate options and explain what may be achievable.

The Implant Assessment Process

Your suitability for dental implants is assessed through:

  • Clinical examination

  • Digital scans and x-rays

  • Assessment of bone and gum health

  • Review of medical history

  • Discussion of expectations and goals

This thorough approach ensures recommendations are based on accurate information rather than assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old for dental implants?

There is no upper age limit for implants. Suitability depends on health and bone condition rather than age. Many older patients are excellent candidates for implant treatment following a full digital assessment with Dr Flatters.

Can I have implants if I have gum disease?

Gum disease must be treated and stabilised before implant placement can take place. Once gums are healthy and stable, implants may well be possible. Dr Flatters will assess your gum health as part of your initial consultation and advise on next steps.

Do I need strong bones for implants?

Adequate bone is needed for implant placement, but bone grafting may be an option if bone levels are low. Digital scans allow us to assess bone levels accurately and determine whether additional treatment is needed. For more information, visit our Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift page.

Can smokers have dental implants?

Smokers may still be suitable for dental implants, but smoking increases the risk of complications and can affect the healing process. Dr Flatters will discuss this during your assessment and may recommend reducing or stopping smoking before and during treatment to improve outcomes.

What happens if I am not suitable for implants?

If implants are not appropriate for your situation, Dr Flatters will explain all suitable alternative treatments clearly so you can make a fully informed choice. No patient leaves without a clear understanding of their options.
